This International Men’s Day (19 November 2024), we’d like to highlight men’s mental health and stress management in the workplace. With the daily demands of work and life, stress can build up quickly, and it’s often seen as something to simply push through. But learning to manage stress constructively can improve wellbeing, resilience, and overall satisfaction at work.

Here are some practical tips to help keep stress in check:

Ease Up on Expectations

When you’re dealing with high stress, it’s okay to ease back on your expectations for yourself. Remember that stress is your body’s way of inviting you to reassess what matters most. By adjusting your focus and reducing demands on yourself, you give your mind space to breathe and recover.

Set Small, Doable Goals

Under stress, it’s easy to zero in on what’s not going well. Try setting small, manageable goals each day to keep your momentum going without feeling overwhelmed.

Prioritise Your Time

Think about what’s causing your stress and try to keep it from spilling over into other areas. Structuring your time around top priorities can help keep things in perspective and prevent stress from taking over.

Recognise Early Signs of Stress

Get to know your own early stress signals and consider an action plan to manage them before things escalate. Knowing your triggers can make all the difference in staying ahead of stress.

Look Back at Past Wins

Remind yourself of times you’ve successfully handled stress before. Reflecting on what worked—whether it was a support network, mindset shift, or strategy—can boost confidence as you work through current challenges.

Reach Out for Support

Stress is easier to manage with a strong support network. Reaching out to family, friends, or colleagues can provide the fresh perspective or encouragement you might need.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced meals, and good sleep are great tools for managing stress. These can reduce the physical effects of stress and help keep you feeling your best.

Lighten Up with Laughter

Humour is a great way to diffuse stress. Whether it’s a quick chat with a friend or watching something funny, a little laughter can provide a quick boost and a fresh perspective.

Seek Help When Needed

If stress sticks around or starts impacting your relationships or work, consider talking to a counsellor, GP, or workplace support. It’s a positive step that can make a big difference.

Be Gentle with Yourself

Stress is often temporary. Give yourself some patience and understanding as you manage it. Self-compassion can go a long way in helping you through tough times.

This International Men’s Day let’s commit to creating a workplace culture that supports open discussions about stress and mental health. Taking simple steps to manage stress can make a big impact, both for the individual and the team, helping everyone work better together.
